It was found that when family members are involved in Home Farming they start thinking positively & engage in constructive action. Vertical Farming helps to get more produce in less space. You get organically grown vegetables out of your own efforts. This activity can be done on your home terrace and around your Home.

A. The benefits of Terrace Horticulture:

  • You will eat at least  five days in a month organically home grown vegetables.
  • If every one does, the food production will go up which is the basic need.
  • Home farm will be a delight to your eyes.
  • It will keep the house cool
  • The electricity consumed to work a fan and an air-conditioner will reduce
  • Greening of mind
  • It will calm you down & you will find inner peace
  • Good physical exercise if you are going to do it yourself
  • Employment opportunity for some one  if you are going to  hire a part time  gardener or home beautifier to maintain and water your terrace garden.
  • Quality of air will improve
  • Your health will remain good.

B. What you can grow?
  • Flowering plants / creepers
  • Medicinal plants
  • Jatropha , the bio gas plant
  • Vegetables
  • Crops like paddy and grow even ground nut

C. Water

  • Use “used water” (waste water) after bacterial treatment (5. Conservation Home / 2. Water Conservation / c. Use Used Water.)
  • Bath room water through kannas root bed treatment (See Waste water treatment folder)
  • Septic Tank (Safetic Tank) treatment

D. How to use treated water?

  • Draw water physically with the help of a vessel from the treated water storage tank and use it for watering the garden
  • Yet another idea would be to have a separate overhead tank for drawing treated water which should have separate pipes to take water to water your terrace and compound wall garden and also can also be connected to the toilet flush tank.

CAUTION:

  • The roof has to be treated and made water proof in consultation with a Civil Engineer. You can give fibreglass coating to the terrace to make it water proof & water safe.
  • A Civil Engineer’s  advice has to be sought with regard to the load bearing capacity of your house and the roof. You have to take into account what you will install like pots, pipes, the plant bed in the form earth, sand, red sand and manure and the weight of plants which will grow.

Remember “In order to convert waste into wealth, you should not convert wealth into waste. Use mostly used and waste materials towards both the terrace garden’s infrastructure (e.g. pot) as well as nurturing the terrace garden” (using only used water for watering). After all our collective main mission is CONSERVATION.

Generally with proper precaution , you can certainly have your Home Farm. Your house will become a paradise on Earth.
